Stovall
Middle School Spark Park
Purpose
The artist's rendering was developed for
Stovall Middle School Spark Park, 11201 Airline Dr. The seating design
includes hand-made tiles, created by students at Stovall and custom colored pavestones for
the circular stage area. The park's design was inspired by our latest travels to
Ghana, West Africa. While visiting the country of Ghana we experieced the ancient
Royal Adinkra Symbols of the Asante. For centuries this language has been used to
communicate the language of the royal, the wise, and the children of the village.
Today, we have adapted some of these
symbols into ceramic tile inlays that will be embedded in custom tinted concrete benches
for the outdoor classroom seating area. Along with the ceramic symbols,
handmade tiles, created by students, will be set into recessed areas of the vertical space
on the seating structure. Pavestone pavers were selected to create the design
in the stage area of the seating structure. The designs were also adapted to the
paved area around the school flag pole. The park is currently in construction
and will be complete spring 2001. To view pics of work-in-progress click
