High School for Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice Mosaic Mural

Spring typically is the time students spend preparing for standardized tests, spring break and the end of school This was not the case for more than a dozen students from the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (HSLECJ) who spent the duration of their spring season designing and constructing a tile mosaic mural for their school’s SPARK Park.
The 16 foot-tall by 24 foot-high mural is a visual narrative of the educational offerings and opportunities that their magnet school is renowned for. The brilliantly colored tile mosaic mural is filled with symbols of law and justice and incorporates vignettes of classes that the students take to prepare them for a career in law enforcement or criminal justice.
The students began working on the mural in mid-January and are worked through their spring break to finalize the work of art. “I love art and I really look forward to a career in law so to bring these two passions together in a mural that will be around forever is really cool. What a great gift to leave for my school and community. I feel very lucky to be a part of this program”, says Juan Luera, a senior at the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice.
The dedication of the mural was held on May 8 at 1:30pm on the school campus, located at 4701 Dickson, Houston TX 77007.
The project is sponsored by the SPARK Park program. SPARK helps public schools develop their playgrounds into community parks. SPARK works with 8 school districts in the Houston / Harris County and have impacted 200+ schools.
