  Welcome

Welcome to the MOCAH Experience. We are keeping busy, there are murals to be painted, sculptures to be built and mosaics to be tiled. Beautifying our neighborhoods is hard work and we could always use a helping hand, be it through volunteering, or of course, our ongoing quest for financial support. Feel free to navigate through our site and check out our previous projects in Our Collection page. Have a great day and remember, MOCAH Moves Matter!!

Leadership Houston Class XXVII Mosaic Mural

Leadership Houston, a top organization developing Houston’s civic leaders, and the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH), the city’s most prominent public art developer, proudly unveiled the first public art project in the city to honor Houston’s broad diversity.

“This is Houston” was created as a unique art concept and community action project designed to beautiful our city and raise awareness of diversity by Leadership Houston Class XXVII. The tile mosaic mural includes images in the categories of art/diversity, education, the environment, healthcare, and leadership. It’s a one-of-a-kind iconic artwork designed to be a legacy and pay homage to our city.

The 6 ft. x 30 ft. custom mosaic mural will be permanently on display as a gift to the community of Montrose and the city of Houston at 2615 Montrose Boulevard at California Street, on the Hubbard Financial Services Building.

The artistic design of this mural was facilitated by MOCAH co-founder and artist, Reginald Adams.

The $25,000+ project was made possible by Class XXVII and community partners: Waste Management, United Way of Greater Houston, Ursula and Angel Jimenez, CenterPoint Energy, AT&T, Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing, JE Dunn, Texas Business Alliance, and Hubbard Financial Services.

High School for Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice Mosaic Mural

Spring typically is the time students spend preparing for standardized tests, spring break and the end of school This was not the case for more than a dozen students from the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (HSLECJ) who spent the duration of their spring season designing and constructing a tile mosaic mural for their school’s SPARK Park.

The 16 foot-tall by 24 foot-high mural is a visual narrative of the educational offerings and opportunities that their magnet school is renowned for. The brilliantly colored tile mosaic mural is filled with symbols of law and justice and incorporates vignettes of classes that the students take to prepare them for a career in law enforcement or criminal justice.

The students began working on the mural in mid-January and are worked through their spring break to finalize the work of art. “I love art and I really look forward to a career in law so to bring these two passions together in a mural that will be around forever is really cool. What a great gift to leave for my school and community. I feel very lucky to be a part of this program”, says Juan Luera, a senior at the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice.

The dedication of the mural was held on May 8 at 1:30pm on the school campus, located at 4701 Dickson, Houston TX 77007.

The project is sponsored by the SPARK Park program. SPARK helps public schools develop their playgrounds into community parks. SPARK works with 8 school districts in the Houston / Harris County and have impacted 200+ schools.

Kashmere Multi-Service Center Mosaic Art Project

Math and geometry are usually not on the top of most middle school kids list of favorite things to do afterschool. But, this is exactly the case for more than a dozen students from Fleming Middle School who are spending each Monday afternoon designing and producing mosaic murals for the newly renovated Kashmere Multi-Service Center, located 4802 Lockwood.

In partnership with Citizen Schools, an after-school apprenticeship program, and through a commission from the Houston Arts Alliance, artist Reginald Adams is leading a team of 15 students in the design and production of 30 mosaic murals that will be incorporated into the neighborhood multi-service center which is just blocks away from where the students attend school.

The 10 week long apprenticeship program provides the students with hands-on experience working alongside a professional artist in the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH) downtown art studio. The program offers a positive and creative outlet for the youth to express themselves but equally as important is the benefit that is provided to the community through the beautification of the multi-service center, a well visited civic space located in the heart of the community.

“What I like most about the art project is that we get to have fun, make art and learn about math which is my favorite subject”, says, Stephen Norman, a 6th grader at Fleming Middle School.

The art apprenticeship program began in October and was completed December 2008. The art project will be unveiled along with the Grand Opening of the renovated multi-service center in the spring of 2009.

The project is sponsored in part by Citizen Schools and Dal Tile with support from the Houston Arts Alliance through the city of Houston.
