Depelchin Children's Center

Mural Project: Self-Discovery

Saturday, January 12, 2002 approximately 15 clients and volunteers from the Depelchin Children's Center will work with public artist and Executive Director of MOCAH, Reginald Adams and assistant artist, Israel Barbosa.  The participants from Depelchin will work one on one  with the artists to create a design for a mural for the children's waiting area of a  newly built facility at 100 Sandman.  The theme of the mural project is Self-Discovery.  The artists will conduct five creativity workshops with the participants to develop the design and composition for the final imagery of the mural.  During each 1 1/2 hour workshop, the participants will be guided through creative writing and art making exercises which explore the dreams and aspirations that  foster self-discovery.

The purpose of the workshops are:

  • To encourage the participants to use their imaginations to produce individual works of art.
  • To expose the participants to a variety of art disciplines including drawing, collage, sculpture, creative writing and mural design.
  • To give the participants the opportunity to express themselves constructively using art.
  • To produce a mural for the children's waiting area in the new facility that will serve as an inspiration to the many clients and visitors that will view the final work of art.

The fifth and final workshop will establish the premise of the composition of the mural.  The participants will reflect on their works and discuss elements of their art that will be integrated in the overall finished mural.
