Teens Make History In Tile

A new tile mosaic mural project produced by the Museum Of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH) and the ArtworkZ Public Art & Design program will be dedicated Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at 10 a.m.   The mural is located on the Aldine Library Branch library, located 11331 Airline Dr., in the Greenspoint area, along the Airline Dr. corridor.  The mural titled, “Read to Succeed”, is made possible by a joint collaboration between the Greater Greenspoint Management District, the City of Houston Mayor’s Office, the Cultural Arts Council of Houston, Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee, Stovall Middle School, Houston Works and the Museum Of Cultural Arts Houston.  Lead by visual artists Reginald Adams and Israel Barbosa, four teens from the Houston Works summer vocational program spent several weeks producing the massive tile mosaic mural.

This event is free and open to the public and will celebrate the accomplishments of area youth and artists committed to enhancing the community through the arts.  This special project has allowed MOCAH and the ArtworkZ Public Art & Design Program to contribute to the beautification and revitalization of the Airline Corridor using public art.  The 10’ x 40’ mural portrays a parade of people of all ages and races walking towards the main entrance of the library, all rendered in brightly colored ceramic tiles.

The Aldine Branch library is located in Houston City Council District B, one of city’s most underserved districts in respects to the arts.  Few if any cultural or arts organizations exist in the immediate community.  Many of the residents living around the library are apartment dwellers and live below the national poverty level, which restricts their exposure to the arts and other forms of cultural enrichment.   Through our innovative public art program, ArtworkZ, we are bringing the arts to the community as well as providing area youth an opportunity to work with professional artists.

“This community mural project exemplifies MOCAH’s philosophy perfectly, we are a museum without walls, so we go to those who cannot come to us,” says Adams.
