This special opportunity will allow MOCAH and our Public Art & Design Program, ArtworkZ, to partner with Greater Greenspoint Management District, the Mayor’s Office, Houston Works and Stovall Middle School to revitalize the Airline Corridor using public art.Community NeedsThe Aldine Branch library is located in Houston City Council District B, one of the cities most underserved districts in respects to the arts. Few if any cultural or arts organizations exist in the immediate community we are seeking to serve. Many of the residents living around the library are apartment dwellers and live below the national poverty level, which restricts their exposure to the arts and other forms of cultural enrichment. Through our innovative public art program, ArtworkZ, we provided students from Stovall Middle School and the Houston Works program an opportunity to work with professional artists to produce a public mural for the newly renovated library. Through a series of design sessions and hands-on production workshops the youth composed and produced the overall design of the mosaic mural.PurposeThis
public murall expounds on the efforts of CACHH, the Mayor’s Office through
the City of Houston, Greater Greenspoint Management District,
Aldine Independent School District, community members, businesses, and artists
to redevelop and revitalize our inner city neighborhoods utilizing public art.
Our goals are:
·
To use public art as a tool to promote the importance and value of
reading. ·
To strengthen student’s understanding of techniques used in mosaics,
mural production and public art. ·
To provide local youth with an opportunity to work with professional
artists. ·
To
encourage area youth to participate in the beautification of their own community
using public art. ProcessThe project began April 2002 and was completed August 31, 2002. During this time period two professional artists, Reginald Adams & Israel Barbosa, from the ArtworkZ program guided and instructed 20 students from Stovall Middle School and the Houston Works Program in designing and producing a public mural that celebrates the power and pleasures of reading. With the assistance from the professional artists the students transformed their thoughts and ideas into a collage of visual poetry. The end result is an artistic monument to power of reading and the strength of public art as a tool for communication. We seek to motivate and inspire present and future residents of the Airline Corridor to visit the new Aldine Branch library with this public art project.Click on the thumbnail images to enlarge the pictures.
